How to Trim Your Dog's Nails at Home

Before you start

Choose a quiet time when your dog is relaxed, ideally after exercise. Gather a quality clipper and styptic powder in case you clip too short.

Step by step

1. Hold the paw gently and isolate one toe.
2. Identify the quick — the pink area in light nails. Avoid it.
3. Clip a small amount at a 45° angle.
4. Reward with a treat after each nail.

If your dog is nervous

Take it over several short sessions — even one or two nails at a time is progress. For dark nails, clip tiny slices to stay clear of the quick.
